The Leeds & Liverpool Canal is an engineering feat of the 18th Century. Started in 1750 and open for its full 147.5 miles by 1810.
Pendle is fortunate in that the Canal runs through the centre of the Borough thus providing a wide variety of leisure activities for both locals and tourists alike.
The Canal has two major flights of locks, one at Greenberfields and the other at Barrowford. The two flights enclose the Canal Summit Pound at a height of 487 feet above sea level. The six reservoirs in Pendle all feed into the Canal and control the water level throughout its length. The famous Foulridge Tunnel is 100 yards short of a mile and when opened in 1796 was a major celebration in Western Europe.
The modern road system crosses the Canal at several points and provides access and ample parking facilities for the visitor to enjoy the peace and tranquillity as the Canal meanders through the beautiful countryside.
Leisure activities include, walking and cycling on the contour following well-kept tow-paths. Fishing on both the Canal and the reservoirs, some of which is free. Sailing by hire boats available from Lower Park Marina, and by the cruise boat The Marton Emperor which operates from Foulridge Wharf gives the visitor a total view of the Canal system.
All this can be rounded of by eating and drinking at the excellent variety of pubs, tearooms and restaurants situated on the tow paths or within walking distance of the Canal.
