Pendle possesses two small specialist museums which are well worth a visit. The British in India Museum at Nelson houses a fascinating collection of material relating to military and domestic life during the heyday of British rule.

The Museum of Yorkshire Dales Lead Mining, in the old Grammar School at Earby, contains many items of mining machinery and miners' personal effects.

Bancroft Mill in Barnoldswick houses an original mill engine powered by steam from a hand-fired boiler, this would have driven the looms weaving the cotton into cloth.

Pendle Heritage Centre in Barrowford features an exhibition which tells the story of the Pendle witches, is home to Pendle Arts Gallery and the Tourist Information Centre. There is also an 18th Century walled garden, shop and tea room.

Walking

Pendle's countryside is criss-crossed by miles of accessible footpaths. Whether you are a serious walker or a rambler there is a route for you. The Pendle Way is a 45 mile circular walk around Pendle which takes you to the summit of Pendle Hill, from where you can enjoy panoramic views of the area. Signs featuring a witch on a broomstick will guide you on your way. Shorter circular walks lead from the Pendle Way itself.

Combine a short walk from one of Pendle's pretty villages with lunch at the local hostelry.

From Wycoller follow the Bronte Way which crosses impressive wild moorland to Haworth, home of the Bronte sisters.

Pendle's Three Peaks, Pendle, Boulsworth and Weets hills, offers walks varying in length from 5 to 8 miles, with refreshments and parking at the beginning and end of each walk.

Towns and villages have town trails with leaflets available detailing routes and points of interest.

For more information about walks, call either Pendle or Barnoldswick Tourist Information Centres (telephone numbers given on the right hand side) and request a copy of the informative 'Walks in Pendle' pack.
